The site of Canal Park, which was dedicated on July 8, 1998, is a heavily wooded flood plain that contains a portion of the original Clinton and Kalamazoo Canal along with the remains of several dams. This will be a passive park that provides walking trails with a tour of the river and old canal bed.
Visitors coming to this park will be able to enjoy the peace and beauty of the forest and maybe catch a glimpse of the deer, foxes, blue herons, hawks and other wildlife that share this nature refuge.
The Historical Commission plans to have additional archeological research on the old canal site. We know the location of a lock, which could be restored. There is now special outdoor signage that explains the purpose of the canal and shows how it was constructed and used.
Canal Park and the surrounding area is indeed a “Historical Gold Mine” that contains the earliest settlements and developments in Macomb County.
Special thanks goes out to John Cavaliere who in memory of his parents so generously donated the land where this park is located.
