It must have taken tremendous effort to make these timbers for the canal. They are extremely heavy. They had been preserved by being underground for 165 years. Once exposed to the air they started to quickly weather. The contractor removed some of the largest timbers to put under his big machinery. There are many people who feel these should have been kept by the township in addition to the smaller ones that were salvaged. This lock was dug up during the construction of a strip mall on Canal Road and Hayes in Clinton Township
